|
Karen Dale Turdo began sculpting seriously in 1987. She has worked alongside many other fine artists who have studied under the instruction of Master Sculptor, Denise Romecki, in the excellent fine art programs offered at the Cultural Arts Center in Columbus, Ohio. Karen is however, very much self-taught and follows her own natural style. She creates original, one of a kind sculptures, hand built in clay and kiln-fired. Clay is her medium of choice; she also works with alabaster, soapstone and gemstone rough. Her other passion is designing and making fine gemstone jewelry and creating beaded jewelry art. Karen takes pride in her association with many professional artists organizations over the years, including juried membership into the prestigious Ohio Realist Group. She served as State Director in 1996 and 1997. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries and juried competitions; in which she has received numerous awards including the 1992 People's Choice Award at the Women's Artist Expo in Ohio. She has presented solo exhibits at the Ardath Lynch Gallery, Columbus, Ohio; Columbus Public Library; Pickerington High School Media Center and the Lobby Gallery of the Groveport Municipal Building in Ohio. In Maine, she held a solo exhibit at the Center Gallery of the Higher Education Center, Maine University System in Ellsworth. Her works of Sculpture were exhibited along with other outstanding Maine Sculptors, at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor during the 2007 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium. Galleries representing Karen's work include Alone Moose Gallery and the Barn Owls Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine; also the Sea Myst Gallery in Prospect Harbor, Maine. Currently, you will find her work represented at the Works of Hand Gallery in Winter Harbor, Maine. Quite often, you may find new works displayed in the large front window at Frank Pierson Optician, 83 Main Street in Ellsworth Maine (Karen has also worked in the Optical Profession for much of her adult life). Karen studied formally and received her Graduate Gemologist Degree from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, California. She realized that to truly create Fine Art Jewelry from precious metals, gemstones and beadwork, one must have real knowledge of the subject.
In July of 2000, Karen and her husband, Anthony, relocated from their home in the historically restored Village of Groveport, Ohio to the small rural Town of Eastbrook, Maine. Their lifestyle changed from the hectic urban pace of the metropolitan Columbus area to the calm and quiet "wildness" of rural Downeast Maine. "Aladdin's Lamp is Mine" they named their home which is serenely nestled in the Maine forest. Karen works from her own Studio Loft overlooking the tranquil serenity of Scammon Pond and in the distance; the magnificent mountains of Mount Desert Island and Lucerne. The sunsets are frequently blinding and beautiful.. For information about visiting Aladdin's Lamp Studio and Gallery, please click here. Current and Upcoming Events |
